When most people think about improving their wardrobe and creating outfits, the first thing they want to do is buy new clothes.
But you should actually do the complete opposite.
Start with your own clothes first.
When you create outfits out of the clothes you have, you’re able to figure out what you like wearing, what you don’t and what’s actually missing.
And once you know that, you will know exactly what pieces to buy and what items are truly worth investing in.
Because what really improves your wardrobe is learning what you feel most comfortable and confident in, what pieces go best together, how to style your outfits and what pieces are missing from your wardrobe.
The average person has between 100 and 150 items in their closet, so your own wardrobe is a great place to start.
Begin by paying attention to what you feel best in.
Are there certain colours, fabrics or outfit combinations you prefer?
What pieces do you avoid wearing?
What feels uncomfortable or unflattering?
When I first started creating outfits, I started with my own clothes.
I learned that I loved working from home in leggings and a sweater during the colder months, and jeans and a top in the warmer months. I was comfortable enough to go for walks and run errands, but still felt put together for online meetings.
For the office or dressier occasions, I realized I loved dress pants, blouses, blazers and dresses. I also learned that longer skirts and bodysuits were not pieces I enjoyed wearing.
I noticed I preferred neutral colours like cream, white, black, navy and hunter green, with brighter pops of colour like yellow, blue and red.
Learning all of this through my own wardrobe taught me what I actually liked wearing and what pieces were worth investing in because I knew I would get a lot of use out of them.
It also helped me identify what was missing to complete and elevate my outfits.
Trying to improve your wardrobe through shopping alone can be expensive and time consuming, because you might buy pieces only to realize later they aren’t things you actually wear.
My best advice? Create outfits from your own clothes first. Learn what you love and improve from there.
